SafetyMode: The AI Parental Control App Tackling Child Online Safety Across Snapchat, Roblox and WhatsApp

AI-powered tool offers on-device content filtering for children’s smartphones, with no data leaving the device

A new AI-driven child safety application, developed in partnership with parenting platform Mumsnet, is offering parents real-time monitoring and content filtering across popular apps including Snapchat, Roblox, WhatsApp and YouTube — available free on Android devices.

The product, SafetyMode, arrives amid growing parental concern about smartphone safety. Research cited by the company found that more than 75% of parents consider keeping their child safe online an near-impossible task, while over 90% of Mumsnet users believe smartphones are insufficiently safe for children by default.

How the Technology Works

Unlike conventional parental control tools that rely on blunt keyword filters or blanket app blocks, SafetyMode uses artificial intelligence to read contextual meaning in conversations and content. The system distinguishes between ordinary exchanges and genuinely concerning interactions, alerting parents only when intervention may be warranted.

Critically, all AI processing takes place on the device itself. No images, messages or personal data are transmitted to external servers, a design choice that addresses privacy concerns that have dogged rival products.

The software monitors and filters harmful material — including nudity, explicit language and potential bullying — across every installed application. Additional parental controls include location tracking and the ability to restrict specific apps or websites.

Pricing and Availability

SafetyMode is available as a free download on the Google Play Store, compatible with Android devices including Samsung and Google handsets. A premium tier, SafetyMode Plus, is priced at £5.99 per month and unlocks remote management of permissions and filters via a web dashboard.

For families without an existing Android device, SafetyMode has developed the OtherPhone, a purpose-built handset produced in partnership with Nothing Technology and Mumsnet. The device comes pre-loaded with SafetyMode software and retails at £279, including three months of SafetyMode Plus at no additional cost.

The OtherPhone also features a ‘boring by design’ home screen mode, intended to reduce compulsive scrolling behaviour. Once a child reaches an appropriate age, SafetyMode can be removed entirely, converting the handset into a standard Android smartphone.

Independent Assessment

Mumsnet contributor Becky K trialled the OtherPhone with her ten-year-old son over a weekend. She described it as a “solid, well-built first smartphone that feels surprisingly premium for £279,” praising the build quality, camera performance and the practicality of the parental controls.

She did flag one friction point for Apple households: “Because my older child and I both use iPhones, and the OtherPhone runs on Android, I found the process a little less straightforward than Apple’s Family Sharing system.”

Despite that caveat, her overall verdict was positive. “I would absolutely recommend the OtherPhone to other parents looking for a first phone for their child,” she said. “It’s well-priced, thoughtfully designed and gives peace of mind to parents without feeling overbearing or restrictive for kids.”

Market Context

The product enters a market where regulatory pressure on technology platforms over child safety is intensifying, particularly in the United Kingdom. While legislative solutions remain slow-moving, market-led tools such as SafetyMode represent a private-sector response to a widely acknowledged gap between the digital environments children inhabit and the oversight mechanisms available to their parents.
