UK Financial Sector Confidence Surges as AI Adoption Accelerates
Lloyds Bank’s tenth annual Financial Institutions Sentiment Survey reveals a sharp rise in optimism across the UK financial sector, with 94 per cent of institutions expecting their businesses to grow over the next decade — up from 81 per cent in 2024 — driven largely by accelerating investment in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
Technology Investment Nearly Doubles as a Strategic Priority
Seven in ten respondents now identify investment in new and emerging technologies as a core growth priority, almost double the 41 per cent recorded last year. Nine in ten believe AI and machine learning will have the greatest impact on UK financial services over the next five years.
Shorter-term outlooks are also strengthening. Five-year growth expectations have risen to 92 per cent from 83 per cent, while 12-month expectations have climbed to 67 per cent from 54 per cent.
UK’s Global Standing Bolstered by Sector Confidence
Confidence in the UK’s position as a leading global financial hub has also improved markedly. 71 per cent of respondents believe the UK will retain its status as a pre-eminent international financial centre, up from 60 per cent the previous year.
The findings reflect the sector’s continued faith in the UK’s structural advantages, including deep capital markets, a credible regulatory framework, and strong international connectivity underpinned by specialist professional services infrastructure.
AI Moves From Ambition to Adoption
Lisa Francis, Global Head of CIB Coverage at Lloyds, said the results pointed to a decisive shift in how institutions are approaching long-term strategy.
“Despite global uncertainty, financial institutions are building confidence by harnessing technology to drive long-term growth,” she said. “Advanced AI and data solutions are moving from ambition to adoption, with institutions increasingly looking at how these technologies can improve productivity, deepen client relationships and create new opportunities across markets.”
Francis added that the next decade’s growth trajectory would be defined by institutions’ capacity to adapt and scale new capabilities, with AI sitting at the centre of that transformation.
Key Findings at a Glance
The survey, now in its tenth year, draws on responses from financial institutions across the sector and serves as one of the more closely watched barometers of sentiment within UK wholesale banking and capital markets.
